Hanging feeders
Buy hanging bird feeders
A hanging bird feeder is the easiest way to encourage garden birds to land closer to home. Hang it from a branch, pergola, hook, or balcony railing, and you'll instantly have a regular feeding spot for tits, sparrows, finches, and robins. Because the food is off the ground, it's harder for cats to get to.
In this collection, you'll find a wide selection: classic wooden bird feeders with roofs, seed silos, suet ball holders, peanut butter pot holders, and decorative feeders such as an acorn, teacup, or ceramic robin. You'll find brands such as Esschert Design, Wildlife Garden, Vogelbescherming, SingingFriend, Wildlifeworld, CJ Wildlife, and Eva Solo.
Which hanging feeder is best for which food?
- Bird feeder with roof: for seeds and loose feed, protected from the rain.
- Seed silo: seeds or nuts gradually slide down, so you need to refill it less often.
- Suet ball holder: for suet balls without a net, which is safer for birds' feet.
- Peanut butter pot holder: simply slide in a pot of bird peanut butter, ideal for tits and robins.
- Feeder with multiple compartments: useful if you want to offer different types of food at the same time.
The best place to hang it
Hang your feeder at a height of about 1.5 to 2 metres, in a place where birds can easily look around. A bush or tree a few metres away provides cover in case of danger, but is not so close that a cat can jump out from it unseen. Hang several feeders a short distance apart, so even shyer species have a chance. Feed especially in winter and during dry periods, when there is little to be found in nature.
Keep it clean
Clean your bird feeder regularly with hot water and let it dry thoroughly. Throw away wet or mouldy food and refill with small portions more often. This keeps it a healthy place for your feathered guests.
